Sustainable Historic Towns

[...]…In order to be most effective, the conservation of historic towns and other urban areas should be an integral part of coherent policies of economic and social development and of urban and regional planning at every level.

ICOMOS: Charter for the Conservation of Historic Towns and Urban Areas, Washington 1987

Historic towns and cities are an important part of the built heritage in the Baltic Sea Region. The area’s wide spectrum of individual urban characteristics, planning and heritage management traditions are the result of different political, economical, social and cultural forces at work. Yet planning and heritage management within different urban systems and settings can be based on similar principles.

The Sustainable Historic Towns Working Group (SuHiTo) was formed in 2000 and is a forum for heritage authorities, urban planners and researchers, aimed at addressing common challenges. Since 2002 the working group has completed two major projects and is currently planning a third for the period 2011-13. The projects are all designed to promote sustainable, best practice urban heritage management.

The collaboration between SuHiTo project partners has shown the value of sharing collective experiences and approaches on an international basis.
